Every morning, Daniel padded around the old ruin arch and counted the blocks before breakfast. “One, two, chew,” he mumbled, because he always nibbled a grass stem on number two. The stones felt warm under the sun, and lizards clicked in the cracks. Daniel wanted to count the top block by himself, but he never stepped under the arch. It looked too tall, too quiet, and much too good at dropping shadows.
Until one day, a pebble with whiskers sneezed, “Achoo!” and rolled out from the lowest block. Because of that, Daniel jumped so high his tail puffed like a brush. Because of THAT, the pebble-mouse giggled and hopped straight through the arch, carrying Daniel’s grass stem. Daniel took one small paw-step, then another. “Give that back, you crunchy rock!” he squeaked. Finally, he stood under the top block, snatched his stem, and counted, “One, two, brave!” Next time you spot the arch blocks, see if the sneaky pebble-mouse is still hiding where Daniel first heard achoo.
