🎨 How to color it

Color the fox rusty orange with a creamy chest and tail tip, make the spotted mushrooms cherry red, and give the oak leaves golden yellow and warm brown edges. Use sharp colored pencils for the mushroom dots, fern fronds, and tiny acorn caps, then switch to smoother strokes on the fox’s broad tail and cheeks. Try hiding one pale blue-gray mushroom among the red ones, as if the fox has just noticed something unusual under the leaves.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Fox Tails Brush Leaves — Under the fern roof, Sable tucked her nose into her tail and hunted for sleep. Read the full story →

Under the fern roof, Sable tucked her nose into her tail and hunted for sleep. The glade smelled of damp bark, peppery leaves, and mushrooms after rain, but every time she closed her eyes, something went tink-tink beneath the oak roots.

A blue mushroom no taller than her paw leaned close. “Don’t tell the squirrels,” it whispered. “The first frost is stuck in my cap, and the sleeping seeds below me will crack if it falls all at once.” Sable wanted her nap badly. Still, she slid her tail across the ground, soft as smoke, brushing frost grains into little piles where the stones could hold them. No owl hooted thanks. No beetle clapped. Only the earth gave a warm, sleepy sigh.

By morning, every fox tail in the world had learned the motion from Sable’s, swish by secret swish. Ever since, foxes carry those grand, leaf-brushing tails, and if you spot this one curled among the acorns, maybe you know what kindness it is hiding.
