Under the sycamores, Runa tapped one paw on the cool park path and invented Bench-Shadow Guess. If a shadow looked like a boat, you barked once; if it looked like a hat, you wagged twice. She wanted every walker, pigeon, and squirrel to play before the bell on the corner rang six. But the shadows lay flat and dull, and even her yellow star tag only gave a tiny clink.

Then Runa noticed a narrow gleam hiding under the bench, trembling like a firefly with stage fright.
