🎨 How to color it

Color the gnome’s hat cranberry red, his striped sleeves golden yellow and cream, the smiling snail soft lavender, and the tall fern fronds deep woodland green. Use sharp colored pencils for the fern leaflets, snail-shell spirals, and tiny harness bells so the small details stay crisp. Try a pearly rainbow swirl on the shell, then keep the path in warm tans so the snail looks as if it is gliding through an old forest postcard.

Under the tallest ferns, Vesper shook his uncle’s dull little harness bell and listened for the fern clock. The bell made only a tired clink, like a spoon in cold tea. He had promised to bring back one tick from the secret clock before moonrise, but the ravine was full of soft moss, wet stone smell, and snails sliding so quietly that even his boots sounded loud.

Then a smiling snail named Ludo lifted his feelers. “Don’t ring it at the clock,” he whispered. “Ring it for the road.” Vesper frowned, but curiosity pulled harder than fear. He tied the bell to Ludo’s reins, climbed onto the great spiral shell, and let the snail choose the path between mushrooms. Clink… hush… clink… hush. Each tiny sound woke another fern. Their fronds bent together, making a green tunnel that had not been there a blink before.

At the tunnel’s end, the bell answered itself from every leaf tip: clink, clink, clinkety-click. The hidden clock was not in one place at all; it was the whole ravine keeping time. Ever since, forest snails have worn little bells, so the ferns remember when to open their secret roads. Next time you spot bells on Ludo’s reins, listen for that tired little clink.
