Every evening, Tamsin sat beneath the prism observatory’s hanging stones and counted one breath for every glint that crossed her paws. She had set herself a small challenge: touch the compass star on her collar before the last glint faded. Each night her nose hovered close, and each night the cool metal felt too bright to press.
Until one day, the lanterns winked out early. Because of that, the crystals stopped scattering their little rainbows; because of that, the ceiling turned into a dark, listening bowl. Tamsin heard the faintest sound from her collar—tink, tink—like a spoon tapping glass underwater.
She lifted one paw. The tag was cold, then humming. Light unfolded across the floor in narrow gold lines, finding every stone, leaf-shaped shard, and spiral of dust. At last, the observatory breathed color again, and Tamsin sat very still, counting one breath for every glint that crossed her paws.
