Under the slippy-silver moon, Luca tucked his knees into his coffin bed and invented Star Dash. The rules were quick: tap the striped pillow, wave to the window, count three bats, then plop beside his squeaky bat doll before the moonbeam moved. “Zoom, flap, plop!” he whispered, and the attic smelled like old wood and cool night air.

Each round, Luca added one paper star from his pillowcase to the blanket. Then a real bat fluttered past with tired wings, and Luca saw the twist in his game: the stars were not points at all. They were landing spots. He slid them quietly along the sill, one by one, where no one clapped and no one saw. Soon the bats rested in a twinkly row, soft as socks.
