🎨 How to color it

Give the warrior’s horned helmet a dark iron gray, the wide shield a deep crimson, the banner a windblown teal, and the stacked cairn stones sandy tan. Use sharp colored pencils for the many angular armor plates and flag shards, filling each polygon from its edges toward the center to keep the cubist lines crisp. Try making the mountain sky pale lavender so the crimson shield and teal banner feel like secret signals against the cold peaks.

Behind the stove-warm wall of the lookout, Kedra invented a game no one else knew: switch one scrap of her old banner for one thing the mountain had left behind. She wanted a blue flint from the marker-cairn before the watch horn sounded. Easy, right? Except the pass outside hissed with ice-dust, and her boots stuck to the cold stones like chewed taffy.

She stepped out anyway, shield up, axe tapping clink-clink on the path. At the cairn, she tied on a torn triangle of red cloth and took the blue flint—but the stones answered with a rattle. Not falling. Talking. Each marker wore a different scrap: red meant rockslide, yellow meant thin ice, green meant goats blocking the ridge. “Oh,” Kedra whispered, because secrets are louder when you almost miss them.

She paid for the flint with her warm mitten, left on the highest stone so the next guard would notice. Then she ran back, cheeks stinging, carrying not just blue flint but the rules for a whole mountain message game. Next time you spot her jagged banner above the cairn, can you guess what warning it is trying to clink-clink home?
