🎨 How to color it

Color the horse’s faceted face in chestnut brown, the layered mane in deep espresso, the pointed ears in warm tan, and the eyes in amber. Use sharp colored pencils and fill one triangle or diamond at a time, turning the page when the narrow mane points get tricky. For a gemstone twist, shade each face facet from light to dark so the horse looks carved from polished crystal.

The story behind this coloring page

The Bit of Blue Glass — Under the old mill roof, Vireo kept a speck of blue glass tucked behind a loose brick. Read the full story →

Under the old mill roof, Vireo kept a speck of blue glass tucked behind a loose brick. It was no bigger than a bean, but when morning light hit it, the whole dusty corner flashed like water. Vireo wanted the glass set into his plain noseband before the canal parade, so he slipped out at dawn, hooves clicking softly over floury stones.

The kiln stood across the canal, past the bridge where barges groaned and ropes smelled of tar. Vireo waited while three carts rattled by, then paid his toll: one mouthful of sweet hay to the bridge goat, who chewed as slowly as winter. At the kiln, the glassmaker squinted. “Too small to set today,” she whispered. “Come back when it has learned the sun.” She tied it to a thread and hung it in the window.

All week, Vireo visited. The blue speck caught gold at breakfast, silver in rain, and rose at sunset. On parade day, it still wasn’t in his noseband—but the glassmaker gave him a tiny prism lantern instead. It swung from his bridle and scattered secret sparks over every stone. If you meet a horse with patient amber eyes, check for the little light that learned the sun.
