Under the soft pine hush, Lumi rubbed her striped scarf with her nose. She had made herself a little challenge: shine three dull sleigh bells before the first star blinked. Scritch, scritch went the wool. The bells stayed gray.
A cold wind curled through the glade, smelling of snow and pine needles. Lumi saw two tiny field mice shiver beside a wrapped box, so she laid one scarf end over them. The bells gave a quiet ting. She tucked the other end around a sleepy bird. Ting-ting! Warm light slipped from the scarf into the bells. “Oh,” whispered Lumi.
