Every evening, Cluckett tapped one pine needle, nudged one gift bow, and invented a new waiting game. Her best game was Freeze-the-Bauble: hold a shiny ornament in your beak until somebody laughed first. The room smelled like sap and ribbon, and the bauble went clink-clink against her beak.
Until one day, she froze so long that a tiny bellbug crawled from the gift ribbon and fell asleep on the ornament string. Because of that, Cluckett could not gobble, squawk, or sneeze. Because of THAT, the family cat peeked in and whispered, “Are you a statue?” Finally, the bellbug woke, rang one teeny ting, and Cluckett dropped the ornament safely into the soft scarf around her neck.
