Every evening, when the bark-lamps blinked on with a honey smell, Fenwick tied his small red ribbon under his chin and sorted the night library. Moth poems went in hollow three, beetle maps in hollow seven, and rain recipes under the dry moss. The ribbon was faded and wrinkled, but it had once wrapped the first note he ever shelved: You belong where questions perch.

Then one dusk, a silver wind slipped between the branches and blew every label blank. Because of that, the moth poems fluttered into beetle maps with a papery shh-shh. Because of that, the youngest fireflies arrived blinking in worried circles, unable to find their bedtime constellations.

Fenwick held the ribbon close. Its threads scratched softly against his feathers, and suddenly he saw tiny ink dots hidden in the weave. “Not a bow,” he whispered. “A catalog.” He followed the dots from hollow to hollow until every story found its roost. When the lamps warmed again, Fenwick tied the ribbon neatly and settled on the middle branch, exactly where questions perch.
