🎨 How to color it

Color the ostrich’s fluffy body sandy tan, its tail feathers warm cream with chestnut tips, and the cactus a dusty green against pale gold hills. Use sharp colored pencils for the layered feathers, working from the outer feather lines inward so the patterns stay crisp. Try a secret sunrise glow—soft peach near the horizon fading to light blue above the ostrich’s tilted head.

Before the heat began to shimmer, Tilo tapped stones around his nest rim: click, clack, almost. He needed one smooth pebble to finish the circle, so he stepped beyond the cool shade of his tumbleweed roof and into the dry wash where the air smelled like dust and peppery cactus bloom. The best pebble gleamed beside a tall saguaro, but reaching it cost him a tail feather, snagged with a tiny rip.

“Don’t tell the jackrabbits,” Tilo whispered, bending close. Behind the fallen feather, where nobody would ever search, a hollow in the cactus held three clear drops. Tilo could have drunk them. Instead, he tipped the pebble like a little cup and carried the water back to the lizards blinking beside his nest. By noon, his rim had one gap and three happy lizards in its shade. If you spot the smooth pebble near Tilo’s feet, keep his secret: click, clack, almost.
