🎨 How to color it

Layer the rabbit’s face in soft pearl gray, make the tall inner-ear petals dusty rose and sage, and set the background daisies in butter yellow and cornflower blue. Use sharp colored pencils and work from the bold outer rabbit outline inward, saving the tiniest curls around the eyes and nose for last. For a quiet glow, blend a pale lavender shadow behind the ears so the black-lined floral patterns feel like lace.

Before the cloister orchard had paths, Elowen pressed her paws into the cold moss and waited for the first thaw-bell under the frozen quince trees. She wanted to hear it before anyone else, but the bell rope hung silent, stiff with frost, and even the bees slept like dots of amber in the wall cracks.

All winter she returned at dusk. Snow softened to rain; rain darkened the bark; still no bell. One evening, while smoothing a nick in her long ear, she felt a hard speck tucked in the warm fold where no bird, wind, or monk had thought to look. It smelled faintly of soil after candle smoke. Elowen carried it to the bell’s shadow and set it in the only thawed ring of earth.

By morning, a flower opened there without a sound, and the bell answered with one low note that trembled through every root. Ever since, rabbits have carried gardens in their ears, because patience found the first seed hidden in the warm fold.
