Under the prism vault, Dorian snapped three chalk marks onto the floor and named his new game Skyrun: leap by cube, turn only at a diamond, never count the same edge twice. The stone smelled of rain-cooled dust, and every footfall clicked ahead of him through the stacked corridors. He raced the rules, not a rival, letting each corner throw him toward another, faster and stranger, until curiosity had him grinning at passages no sensible map would admit.
At the seventh diamond, he noticed the echo was arriving before his shoes. He stopped. Above him, the vault’s glass ribs caught late sun, and the maze below answered in bright points: his path was not across a city at all, but through a constellation folded flat. The game had been invented by his feet and finished by the sky. Dorian laughed, touched the next chalk mark, and ran on through the rain-cooled dust.
