Every evening, Dex sat on a crate beside the ferry dock and counted the lantern posts across the black water: one, two, three, home. Under his stem he kept a flat white seed, too plain for anyone to notice, though it warmed whenever the ferry bell rang. He wanted only to shine in his proper place, where the ropes smelled of rain and river mud and the dock boards knew the shape of his base.

Until one day, fog rolled in thick as wool and swallowed every post. Because of that, the ferry drifted past the bend, its bell clanging lost and lonely. Because of that, Dex’s little seed began to tick against his rind—tap, tap, tap—pulling him toward the water instead of the crate. “Show me,” Dex whispered.

He set the seed in the notch of his grin, and its pale glow drew a thin line through the fog. The ferryman followed it back, oars creaking, until the boat bumped the dock with a soft wooden kiss. Finally, Dex tucked the seed back under his stem, warmer than before, and counted the lantern posts across the black water: one, two, three, home—can you find the place where a compass seed might hide?
