Under the tick-tick tree, Zella pressed her pumpkin ear to the mailbox post. She wanted to catch the first fall whisper before the wind gobbled it up. The box smelled like dust, rain, and one old stamp. Tap, tap, tap went a tiny spider. Then—achoo!—a red leaf popped from under the metal flag.
“Don’t tell,” whispered the mailbox. Zella leaned closer. Hidden beneath the flag was a little leaf nest, stuffed with curly vine seeds. The seeds jumped out, zip-zip-zip, and wrapped the post so the mailbox would not sneeze its mail away. Ever since then, roadside mailboxes wear vines in autumn, and if you peek by Zella’s tick-tick tree, you may spot where the secret first popped out.
