Under the balloon hall’s crinkly ceiling, Bram made up a game: tap three star strings, then find the one that did not wiggle back. He wanted to win before the cider fizz stopped popping. Tap, tap, tap—one gold star stayed still. “That one is hiding something,” Bram whispered.

He stepped off the soft party rug and clomped past squeaky balloons. A ribbon snagged his cape, and one paper star stuck to his boot, but Bram kept going. Behind the still star, a tiny door breathed cinnamon air. Inside waited a glowbug with a silver crumb. “For the brave first tapper,” it said.
