🎨 How to color it

Color the pumpkin a rich tangerine, the curved stem olive green, the bat’s fur charcoal gray, and the scarf a cozy cranberry red. Use colored pencils for the pumpkin’s ribbed sections so you can shade each curved slice darker near the black outlines. Try making the stars pale yellow and the clouds lavender-blue, so the bat and pumpkin feel like they are sharing a secret night sky.

Under the observatory roof’s round brass dome, Quill kept his grin pointed at the sky, waiting for one drop of star-sweet dew to slide down the old telescope. It smelled like cold metal, dust, and faraway rain. The astronomer’s mice had whispered that the dew appeared only after the third cloud passed the moon. Quill wanted just one sip before dawn, so he rolled from his warm cushion onto the chilly tiles and began counting clouds.

The first cloud was puffy as a sheep. The second dragged silver shadows over his stem. Then a tiny bat in a cranberry scarf tumbled out of the dark with a papery flap-flap and landed beside him. “Don’t blink at the third cloud,” she squeaked. “It’s shy.” Quill’s rind prickled from the cold, and waiting felt heavier than rolling uphill, but he held still while the bat tucked her scarf around both of them.

At last, the third cloud crossed. A bright drop gathered, trembled, and fell—not onto the telescope, but into Quill’s heart-shaped nose. It tasted like pear, frost, and a secret kept well. He brought back no cup, only a new quiet glow; next time you spot the bat by his side, see if you can tell which cloud is the third.
