🎨 How to color it

Try deep teal for the tall central arrow star, warm gold in the nested diamond bands, coral for the outer triangles, and slate blue along the chevrons. Use sharp colored pencils and work from the center outward, because the thin parallel lines and tight corners will reward clean points more than broad marker strokes. For a mischievous twist, make every other chevron band slightly brighter so the star seems to flicker as your eye moves across it.

At the tessellation theater, Nico slid a dull coat button across his palm while the floor’s arrowed stars tucked themselves into neat black seams. He had brought the button because his sister once claimed it was “too boring to lose,” which made it, naturally, the funniest object in his pocket. Under the stage lamps, triangles leaned into triangles, diamonds nested like whispers, and Nico tried not to grin too loudly.

The pattern keeper rang a tiny brass bell, and the walls began their evening folding: chevrons stepped inward, points met points, and every sharp line found a partner. Nico placed the button at the center for scale, intending one private joke. Instead, the “dull” button caught the light, split it into teal, gold, coral, and blue, and sent little sparks racing through every zigzag aisle. The audience gasped; Nico bowed to his button. Joy that large was clearly not pocket-sized, so he let the star keep shining and laughed until the folded seams laughed back.
