Every morning, Runa climbed the wind-carved observatory and touched her dull brass sky-key to the frost-crusted rail, listening for the small chiming note only she had ever heard. Until one day the note answered from above, and the clouds folded into bright, silent spirals. Because of that, the sleeping village woke to blue-green light on every roof; because of that, Runa ran down with the key warm against her tongue, calling the bakers, skiers, and night watch to come see. Finally, she laid the little key on the snow for anyone to turn, and joy rang wider than the small chiming note.
