🎨 How to color it

Color the dolphin a smooth ocean blue, the spotted tube coral peach with lavender dots, the kelp in sea green, and the tiny fish bright yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the coral spots, narrow seaweed leaves, and small bubbles, then fill the dolphin’s broad body with even side-to-side strokes. Under the warm shimmer of the seagrass meadow, Calder held one bubble on the tip of his nose and counted the slow sway of kelp. He had challenged himself to make the smallest fish laugh without splashing, squeaking, or doing his famous tail-flop. The water tasted salty and bright; the tube coral smelled faintly like wet stone. “Not yet,” Calder whispered, though his grin wobbled.

One bubble floated up. Then two. Calder crossed his flippers and waited while little silver fish nibbled at crumbs near the coral. A crab clicked by, clack-clack, wearing a bit of seaweed like a hat. Calder wanted to giggle first, but he squeezed it behind his smile.

Then the smallest fish swam forward with a serious face and blew three bubbles in a perfect tiny mustache under Calder’s snout. Every fish burst into wiggles.
