🎨 How to color it

Color the pegasus pearl white with silver-gray feathers, the knight’s armor bright steel, the long banner royal blue, and the distant castle pale gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the layered wing feathers and the narrow stair edges, then fill the larger cloud shapes with lighter pressure. Try a sunrise stained-glass effect behind the towers, shifting each ray from lemon yellow to peach to soft rose.

By breakfast, the blue tassel at Orin’s lance tip had frayed to threads, and the Dawn Procession began at noon. He slipped from the warm stable loft with Brindlewing, his pegasus, while the other riders polished helmets below. The sky stair hummed under Brindlewing’s hooves, glass-cool and bright, climbing toward the upper market where tassels snapped like little flags in the wind.

Halfway up, a step gave a sharp clink. An old cloud-mender sat cross-legged in the gap, sorting broken bits of stair that smelled faintly of rain. “Hold this,” she whispered, and tucked Orin’s ruined tassel into a crack. He wanted to race past, but Brindlewing folded one wing and waited. Orin gave up his last honey cake to steady her shaking hands while she tied the threads into a knot of blue light.

When the final bell rang, Orin reached the castle with no new tassel at all. Then the repaired step flashed below him, and every stair answered in blue, one after another, all the way home. The procession turned to follow the glow, and Orin felt the secret tug in his chest: he had not missed his place; he had found it. Next time you trace those bright stairs with your eyes, see if you can spot where the blue tassel began.
