🎨 How to color it

Color the dolphin ocean blue, the big and little D sunny yellow, the curling waves turquoise and teal, and the sprinkled donut strawberry pink with rainbow sprinkles. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight wave curls, bubbles, and donut sprinkles, then switch to broader strokes for the large letters and dolphin body. Try making the water darker inside the big spiral wave so the dolphin looks as if it just burst through a deep-blue doorway.

The story behind this coloring page

Della’s Donut-Wave Secret — Under Splash Reef, where the tide smelled like salt and sugar-kelp, Della flicked a ring of foam onto her nose. Read the full story →

Under Splash Reef, where the tide smelled like salt and sugar-kelp, Della flicked a ring of foam onto her nose. She had invented a game called Donut-Dash: leap through a round wave, tap a floating sea-donut, and shout the best D word before the bubbles popped. She wanted every shy fish in the reef to play, but the waves kept curling shut too fast, gulp-gulp, like secret doors.

So Della tried a trick I probably should not tell you. She whispered, “Donut, don’t drift—dance!” Then she smacked the sea with her tail. Up rolled one huge round wave, striped with moonlight, and the donut spun beside it, sprinkles clicking like tiny shells. Della shot through the middle and laughed so loudly that the sound bounced off the uppercase D rock and the little d post: “Duh-duh-duh!”

The laugh was too big to keep. Crabs clapped, minnows darted, and even the alphabet tide copied the shape: a tall line with a round belly, and a smaller one with a round belly too. Ever since, D has carried that round, delighted sound, and if you find the donut near Della’s splash, you’ll know exactly where the secret game began.
