Under the lander’s soft ticking, Jory invented a game called Pad-to-Pad: step only where the round footpads made dark moons on the dust. A striped pebble winked beside a little crater, just beyond the safe path. Jory wanted it for the cabin shelf before the others finished their checklist. Out went one boot, then another—puff, hush, puff—past the ladder and under the silver belly of the ship.
The price came at the fourth jump. Jory’s sample clip snapped, and three plain pebbles bounced away in slow, silly arcs. “Oh, come back,” Jory whispered, but the radio answered only with crackle. Kneeling near the footpad, Jory saw something stranger than the striped pebble: dust had settled in neat tiny dashes around the metal ring. Not footprints. Not wind. There was no wind here.
Jory traced the dashes with one gloved finger. They pointed back to the ladder, then up to the small antenna, then to Earth shining like a marble. The game had found a secret: the lander’s gentle tremble was writing in moon dust. Jory tucked the striped pebble into a pocket and climbed back changed, listening for messages in every puff and hush; can you spot the round footpad where the first dash began?
