Every evening in the phase gallery, Juno slid the crescent panels, half-moon panels, and round moon panels into their quiet places before the star visitors arrived. She wanted one pattern that would make everyone stop whispering and call their friends over, but the sky always felt almost finished, like a song missing its last note. The gallery smelled of cold dust and silver polish, and the galaxy streams hummed softly overhead.
Until one evening, the round moon panel would not settle. Because of that, Juno pressed her ear to its smooth middle and heard a tiny sound: plink, plink, plink, like glass beads in a pocket. Because of that, she opened the panel where nobody ever looked, not at the craters, not at the rim, but at the plain center.
Inside waited a hidden choir of seed-stars, packed close and glowing blue-white. “You were saving your song?” Juno whispered. At last she tipped the moon toward the galaxy streams, and the seed-stars rang out so brightly that every telescope in the gallery turned by itself. Next time you see the full moon among the crescents, listen for that last note in the middle.
