Every day after breakfast, Elio hopped onto the ridge rail and practiced his private challenge: carry one envelope from the east perch to the echo post without opening it. The paper always smelled faintly of mint gum because his cousin stuffed jokes inside, and Elio’s beak always itched to peek. Until one day, a puffball cloud sneezed, “Hoo-choo!” and the envelope flipped from his talons like a white pancake.
Because of that, Elio flapped after it past the big alphabet markers, pretending the squeaky wind was not laughing. Because of THAT, the envelope smacked the tall E, bounced toward the little e, and nearly sailed into a sun-warmed thistle patch. Elio swallowed his squawk, stretched one claw farther than he ever had, and pinned the corner before it tore. “No peeking,” he told his beak. At the echo post, he finally opened the note: Why did E bring an envelope? Because it had excellent delivery! Elio groaned so loudly the hills answered, “Excellent!” Next time you spot that wobbly envelope, check whether it still smells like mint gum.
