Every day, under the picnic hill leaf, Ivy the inchworm played her new game: she listened for tiny I sounds and tucked them inside her curl. “In, inch, ice,” she whispered, feeling the leaf’s cool ribs under her feet. Until one day, a bell went ting-ting, and a cart rolled up smelling like vanilla snow. A round scoop shone beside a tall waffle cone, and one sweet drip slid down with a soft plip.
Because of that, Ivy stretched closer to hear it. Because of that, her leaf tipped, swish, and carried her right beside the cone. For a moment, the hill felt too wide and bright. Then the cherry’s stem curved like a little path, and the big letter I stood nearby like a friendly gate. Ivy placed her tiniest sound inside it: “I.” At last, her game had a home. If you peek beside the ice cream, you may find Ivy exactly where she belongs, under the picnic hill leaf.
