Under the tall grass, Bram pushed his cap wider and wider. A tiny snail had curled beside his stem, and the morning sun was sliding closer, warm as toast and too bright for snail dreams.
Then a thin sunbeam slipped under Bram’s cap and whispered, “May I count your hidden lines?” Bram shivered. No one had ever gone beneath his cap before. He held still while the beam touched each rib with a tickly gold hum. “There,” said the sunbeam. “Now your shade will know where to fall.”
