🎨 How to color it

Color the turkey’s pumpkin body golden orange, the fan feathers cranberry red and warm brown, the pumpkin hat deep orange, and the maple leaves honey yellow. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the turkey’s big belly and feather shapes, and don’t worry if little hands go past the bold lines. For a fun twist, make each acorn cap a different fall color so they look like tiny party hats around the turkey.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Turkey Hats Have Stems — Under the garden gate, Bix tucked a button-sized pumpkin lid beneath his wing and crept toward the harvest circle. Read the full story →

Under the garden gate, Bix tucked a button-sized pumpkin lid beneath his wing and crept toward the harvest circle. He wanted to place one maple leaf on the welcome stool before the guests arrived, but the wind went whoosh-whish and sent every leaf skittering over the cold dirt.

Bix’s toes trembled. He set his little lid on his head so both wings were free. “Hold still, leaves,” he whispered. The pumpkin stem bobbed like a brave finger pointing up. One by one, the leaves slid toward him, caught on the round pumpkin rim, and stayed.

Ever since that soft, windy morning, turkeys wear pumpkin hats with stems when Thanksgiving leaves need gathering. If you spot Bix’s bobbing stem, you’ll know which hat called the leaves home under the garden gate.
