Under two wavy banners, Pippa bounced on her toes with a tiny paper sun tucked in her pocket. She had made it before breakfast, using crinkly gold foil, to leave for the person who wiped the court until it smelled like lemons. “Fast cheer, then secret delivery!” she whispered.
Pom-poms whooshed. Sneakers squeaked. The basketball thumped near her foot like a drum: boom, boom, boom. Pippa spun toward the hoop and raised both arms high.
Then the overhead fan puffed the paper sun out of her pocket. It sailed under the bleachers and landed beside a mop bucket with a note: THANK YOU. The custodian found it after everyone cheered and tucked it on his cart, smiling where nobody saw. Next time you spot Pippa’s lifted pom-poms, can you imagine that little gold sun flying from her pocket?
