🎨 How to color it

Color the player’s jersey royal blue with a bright white number 7, make the basketball burnt orange, and give the backboard a cool light gray rimmed in black. Use sharp colored pencils for the net’s crisscross cords and the court markings, then switch to smooth marker fills on the jersey and shorts. Try golden-yellow streaks behind his shoulders and around the bouncing ball so his fast break feels like it is carrying its own spotlight.

Under the squeaky lights of East Bell Gym, Rafi kept dribbling toward the hoop with a secret grin tucked behind his teeth. He wanted everyone to hear the new cheer he had made, the kind that thumped in your chest like a bass drum, but the afternoon game had gone quiet. Even the ball sounded lonely: bap, bap, bap on the varnished floor. Coach Vale had said, “Save your breath for the shot,” but you and I know joy hates being saved.

At the free-throw line, Rafi’s sneaker caught on a curled edge of paint inside the big number 7 on his jersey. Not on the floor—on the jersey itself. A tiny paper corner poked from the stitched number, a place nobody ever checked because numbers are supposed to just sit there. Rafi tugged it free while still bouncing the ball. Inside was a note, crackly as old popcorn: IF YOU FIND THIS, SHOUT FOR SOMEONE ELSE.

So Rafi shouted his cheer, not for himself, but for Tessa on the bench, Coach Vale, the custodian sweeping by the doors, everyone. The sound bounced off the backboard and came back bigger. Ever since then, basketball jerseys have carried numbers on the front, where a hidden bit of joy can press right over the heart; next time you see that bold 7, check if it looks ready to shout.
