🎨 How to color it

Color the boy’s party hat sky blue with yellow stripes, make the number 7 shirt cherry red, and give the balloons bright mixes of teal, purple, and orange. Use chunky crayons or markers for the big balloons and banners, and don’t worry if little hands color over the confetti lines. Try making the cupcake candle glow with a tiny circle of golden yellow around the flame.

Milo’s Seven-Step Candle — Down the hall, the party room smelled like vanilla frosting and warm paper streamers. Read the full story →

Down the hall, the party room smelled like vanilla frosting and warm paper streamers. Milo held one cupcake with both hands and whispered, “Seven steps, all by myself,” because the candle was for his seventh birthday and the table felt very far away.

Step three squeaked under his shoe. Step four caught his sleeve on a balloon ribbon, tug-tug, and the cupcake wobbled. Milo stopped, breathed in the sweet candle smoke, and let the ribbon slip loose before taking the last tiny steps.

When he came back, he did not ask to be carried. He waved with his free hand, cheeks pink as confetti. Can you find the cupcake that made seven steps feel just right?
