Under the morning leaves, Pippa chased a sound: ting-ting, hush-hush. She wanted to find the tiny dew chimes before the sun dried them away. Past the daisies and curled fern tips, she met a silver snail carrying one clear drop on his shell.
“Step softly,” whispered the snail. Pippa rose onto one toe so the grass would not jiggle. Ting! The dew drop sang. She lifted her arms, pointed her other foot, and every flower answered with a gentle bell. Ever since, fairy dancers point their toes to wake the dew chimes without shaking them loose. Next time you see her raised foot, can you hear the first ting-ting?
