Beside the cool wall of the corner studio, Vio pressed one painted palm to the edge of her mat. Her little challenge was to make a border all by herself before stretch time ended: hand, hand, toes, hand. The paint smelled sharp and sweet, and the wooden floor gave soft tick-tick sounds when she turned.
She sat tall, lifted her arms like a round window, and counted the spaces she had made. A bar of gold slid from the mirror and landed beside her prints. Then another. The mirror was making its own bright shapes, quiet as a held breath. “You’re helping,” Vio whispered. When the bell chimed, her mat had a border of hands and sunshine.
