Under the clackety pumpkin gate, Moxie practiced her dash every morning: left stem, right stem, hop back home before the wind went whoo! She wanted to beat the gate’s creaky swing. One bright, leafy morning, she pecked the left pumpkin stem—tap!—but a gust shoved the gate open with a groan.
Because of that, Moxie sprinted through swirling leaves to reach the right pumpkin. Because of that, the other hens cheered from the fence as her feet pat-patted over cool grass and bumpy pumpkin vines. At last she tapped the right stem, spun around, and landed in the exact middle as the gate clicked shut behind her. “This is my spot!” she clucked. The pumpkins glowed, the leaves twirled, and next time you see her by that clackety gate, can you hear her feet go pat-pat-whoo?
