Under a lemon-slice moon, Pip patted the fish badge he had cut from shiny cereal-box foil. Snip, tape, pat-pat! His red cape smelled like crayons and glue, and the little stars he stuck on it wiggled when he sat on the warm roof tiles.

A tiny window-washer snail slid up the chimney with a squeaky sponge. “Missed a spot,” she said, and dabbed one dot of silver soap on Pip’s badge.
