🎨 How to color it

Try tangerine and coral for the butterfly’s patterned wings, terracotta for the many plant pots, leafy green for the hanging vine, and pale sky blue on the glass panes. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny dots, ovals, and scalloped edges on the wings, then switch to broader strokes for the window frames and stone floor. For extra sparkle, blend a warm yellow glow behind the butterfly so it looks like it just swooped through a stripe of greenhouse sunlight.

The story behind this coloring page

Cleo’s Sunbeam Relay — Every day, Cleo raced between the greenhouse pots, tapping one leaf, then one glass pane, then the next leaf before the gardener’s kettle whistled. Read the full story →

Every day, Cleo raced between the greenhouse pots, tapping one leaf, then one glass pane, then the next leaf before the gardener’s kettle whistled. She wanted a faster game, so she pinched loose plant labels from the gravel and built Sunbeam Relay: each label had to catch a flash and pass it along. The warm glass smelled of wet soil and mint.

Then a roof shade snapped loose with a flappy whack and covered the seedling shelf. Because of that, Cleo’s first bright square vanished. Because of that, her relay went crooked, bouncing light into the rosemary, the hanging vine, even the open window. “New rule!” she cried. She tilted every label by wing-widths, zip-zip-zip, until a golden line leaped from bench to bench and landed on the shivering seedlings.

The gardener never knew who made the little sunrise, but Cleo did. Her labels stood like tiny trophies in the dirt. Next time you spot her between the pots, see if you can trace the path of Sunbeam Relay before the kettle whistles.
