🎨 How to color it

Layer antique gold on the crown and arch borders, deep teal on the feather fans, ruby red on the central jewels, and warm ivory on her gown panels. Use sharp colored pencils for the chevrons, diamonds, and tiny lotus shapes, turning the page as needed to keep each Art Deco edge crisp. For a glamorous twist, shade the feathers from teal at the handles to pale mint at the tips, then echo that gradient in the small plumes behind her crown.

Behind the west arcade’s locked service door, Vesper kept a fan frame no wider than her palm, all bare ribs and stubborn glue. Everyone thought she wanted new parade jewels; between us, she wanted the court to stop passing her things already finished. At dusk she slipped out with thread scissors in her sleeve, following the dry papery whisper of molted ostrich plumes piled in the old costume loft.

The price was small and immediate: dust on her tongue, a snag torn in one silk cuff, and one perfect feather lost to the vent that breathed warm brass-smelling air from the furnace below. She almost turned back. Then the scissors made their first clean snip—click—and the loft seemed to lean closer, as if it approved of hands that dared.

By midnight, Vesper returned with fewer feathers than she had planned and more certainty than she knew how to carry. She bound each plume herself, uneven at first, then steadier, until the fan opened with a hush like a private door. When the morning trumpets called, she lifted her handmade secret beneath the arch, and the bare ribs in her palm were gone.
