🎨 How to color it

Give the princess’s linen dress soft ivory, her broad collar turquoise and gold, the lotus columns sandy beige, and the papyrus flowers pale pink with green stems. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny collar beads, fan petals, wrist bands, and border patterns, then switch to smoother strokes on the dress panels and stone floor. Try a warm sunset peach behind the pyramids so the cool turquoise jewelry and fan details stand out.

The stone tiles still held the night’s coolness when Princess Nefra set herself a tiny trial: she would carry the festival fan from the storeroom to the sun court without asking anyone to walk beside her. The fan was wider than her arm, stitched with stiff reeds and painted half-finished, and it made a dry hush-hush against her skirt. Beyond the columns, the desert shone bright as a brass bowl.

At the middle step, a hot wind slipped in. It rattled the palm leaves, tugged Nefra’s braids, and scattered three blue lotus petals from the offering tray. Her fingers tightened. “Just one more tile,” she whispered. Then she opened the plain fan and turned it, not away from herself, but toward the trembling petals.

The breeze softened. The petals floated back, one by one, and settled along the fan’s ribs, leaving blue shapes where they touched. Ever since, palace fans have carried painted petals, so a small brave breath can remember where to land. If you find Nefra in the courtyard, can you spot the fan that caught the first hush-hush breeze?
