Every afternoon, Tavi patrolled Crabcap Beach with a shell whistle, checking that no wave had nibbled the sandcastle towers and no gull had stolen the bucket. The sun made the wet sand smell salty and warm, and the umbrella snapped, flap-flap, like it was laughing at him. Then one day, his whistle gave a ridiculous sneeze: “Pffft-choo!” A blue paper star popped out.
Because of that, Tavi tipped the whistle, and a whole stream of tiny stars skittered across the sand. Because of that, the castle’s gate began to wiggle. He dug where nobody ever looked—under the umbrella pole—and found a buried party crank tied to the castle by seaweed string. “Who booby-trapped my castle?” Tavi cried, delighted.
He turned the crank. The towers puffed shells, paper stars, and coconut-scented bubbles until even the crabs wore confetti. Tavi blew the whistle for everyone to come, because a joy that noisy needed witnesses. Next time you spot the leaning umbrella, can you guess where the beach hid its giggle?
