For three low tides, Thalia carried a scallop shell into the crystal cavern and held it still. She wanted to hear the old echo the cave was famous for, the one said to sound like bells under snow. Water slipped over the stone ledges with a hush-hush sound, and cold light trembled on the sharp crystal points. “Not yet,” she whispered, though her fingers tingled from waiting.
Little silver fish nosed around the sandy pool below her. Bubbles rose from nowhere, plip, plip, plip, and broke against the ceiling roots of stone. Thalia counted them instead of swimming away: seven small, one large, three small. The pattern returned, slower, as if the cavern were breathing through a secret flute.
Then she noticed the brightest crystal was not making light at all. It was catching the bubbles inside its clear heart, turning each one into a tiny ringing note. Thalia placed her shell beside it, and the echo finally answered, soft as moonlit glass. If you follow the bubbles in the cavern, can you find the patient crystal that had been singing all along?
