Under the hushy oak roof, Princess Rowena set one boot on an acorn and whispered, “That counts as north.” She had just invented Acorn-Path, a game where every nut that rolled from her basket got to vote on the way home. The trouble was, the basket held pumpkins, pinecones, and one very bossy squirrel smell of damp leaves—and the acorns kept bouncing away before she could mark their votes.
Tuk, tuk, tik! They skipped between roots, over a silver stick, and straight toward a dark place where no path had ever stayed for long. Rowena followed, cloak swishing with dry-leaf scratch, until the acorns gathered in a perfect curve at her feet. She set her crown of oak leaves on her hair and placed one last acorn in the gap. The curve became a path, golden and certain, leading home through the trees.
So here is the secret: ever since Rowena finished Acorn-Path, autumn woods remember where children belong by dropping acorns along the right way. Next time you spot the acorns around her boots and basket, see if you can tell which one made the final turn.
