🎨 How to color it

Give the robot’s armor polished silver and deep teal panels, the stepped skyscrapers warm sandstone, and the sunburst rays golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many thin Art Deco stripes on the chest, belt, and towers, coloring matching left-and-right panels together to keep the symmetry crisp. Try a mischievous twist by making the robot’s eye slits bright lime green, as if it just switched on a secret city signal.

Above the morning roofs, Dex tightened the last brass strip on his handmade sunrise signal. It stood between two tall towers like a fan of straight golden paths, and every piece had come from his own parts bin: bent elevator trim, lamp screws, even one cookie-tin lid that still smelled faintly of vanilla.

He pressed the chest switch. Click. The rays snapped open with a grand zzzip, bright enough to make the clouds look freshly ironed. Dex planted his heavy boots, ready for the city to cheer at his excellent work.

Instead, a pigeon in a tiny paper crown landed on his shoulder. “Needs a wink,” she cooed, and pecked one loose screw. The whole signal tilted, and the sunburst flashed on, off, on, off—like a giant eye teasing every window downtown.

Dex’s gears hummed with pride. He had built a sunrise; the pigeon had found its joke. Next time you see those straight rays behind his helmet, can you spot the one that helped the whole city wink?
