Every morning before the tide clapped clap-clap on Pebblebar, Juno dragged driftwood, kelp string, and shiny shell chips into a crooked workshop behind the sea grass. She wanted to build a parade float that could make her little cousins squeal with laughter. Snip went her claws. Scritch went the sand. But one windy morning, the float’s best part—a tiny bell that made a ridiculous hiccup sound—vanished.
Because of that, Juno searched the conch, and her cousins searched the starfish tracks, and a gull searched only for snacks. Because of THAT, the float sat quiet as a sleeping clam while the parade boats bobbed far out on the glittering water. “Nobody look at my messy shell,” Juno said, puffing up with embarrassment as she reached over her back to scratch an itchy painted patch.
Ting-hic! The bell popped from a pocket she had sewn between two shell plates for “important future nonsense” and then forgotten. Juno tied it to the float with her own kelp knots, lifted one claw, and led the noisiest, wobbliest parade Pebblebar had ever heard. Next time the tide claps clap-clap, check the patterned shell first—Juno might be hiding more important future nonsense.
