Under the first blue hush of morning, Juno tucked a tiny shell bell beneath her front flipper and drifted over the reef garden. It was no bigger than a limpet, but when she moved, it made a silver ting that trembled through the water. Juno had saved it from her hatching beach, where the tide had sung around her feet, and she wanted to hear that sound once more among the coral lanes.

She passed fan coral soft as feathers, pebble caves smelling of salt and rain, and little fish that flashed like dropped coins. The bell answered every current: ting by the seaweed, ting by the bubbles, ting beneath the great rolling window of water above. Juno slowed to listen. “Do you hear it too?” she whispered.

Then the reef began to glow back. Each ting made a different creature lift its head: a yellow fish, a shy crab, a sleepy eel, even the coral polyps opening like tiny hands. The bell had not been remembering the beach for Juno alone; it had been inviting the whole reef to the sunrise.
