🎨 How to color it

Layer amber and chestnut through the owl’s feather panels, use deep sapphire for the crescent-moon glass, and touch the stars with pale gold. Because the owl is packed with tiny curls, leaf veins, and narrow stained-glass segments, use sharp pencils and color one enclosed shape at a time. Try making the owl’s huge eyes warm honey against a cool violet-blue night, so the stare feels almost lantern-lit.

Under the observatory’s glass roof, Quill tapped a pencil against his teacup and invented a game called What Is the Moon Hiding Now? The rules were excellent because he changed them whenever he was losing: one point for a star, two for a leaf, three if the owl blinked first. Silver light smelled faintly of rain on stone, and the panes answered with tiny warm ticks. Then Quill noticed the owl was not a judge at all; its patterned feathers were keeping score in curls, crescents, and smug little spirals. He bowed, accused it of cheating beautifully, and played until dawn tapped its pencil against the roof.
