🎨 How to color it

Layer deep teal into the large lotus petals, amethyst into the faceted gem shapes, and antique gold along the sweeping outer arches. Use sharp pencils and color from the center outward so the narrow pane lines stay crisp between the repeated petals. For a sly stained-glass glow, blend each gem from pale lavender on one side to rich violet on the other, as if light is winking through it.

The conservatory rotunda settled into its evening manners: fern shadows cooling on the marble, lemon oil shining along the rail, and Elara’s dust cloth making soft whisk-whisk circles over the pew ends. She had stayed late to polish the old stained-glass window before the midnight recital, because the visiting quartet insisted the room sounded better when the glass was clean. The window, all lotus curves and jewel panes, accepted her attention with the calm importance of a duchess.

Then it snickered. Not creaked, not settled—snickered, a tiny bright pffft from somewhere near the purple panes. Elara paused with her cloth in midair. A beetle in a waistcoat of pollen stepped from a lead seam, bowed with absurd seriousness, and announced that the window had been holding its breath for eighty-three years whenever anyone called it “solemn.” At once the lotus seemed less like a sacred flower and more like a magnificent eye trying not to wink.

Elara laughed so hard the sound bounced up into the dome, and the beetle tapped one pane as if starting an orchestra. When the quartet arrived, every note landed exactly where it should: cello in the teal curves, violin in the gold arcs, viola in the violet facets, and Elara in the back row, smelling lemon oil and dust, exactly where the window had been waiting to snicker.
