🎨 How to color it

Layer the butterfly’s wings in sapphire blue and amethyst, color the two peonies coral pink, and give the surrounding leaves deep emerald with olive highlights. Use sharp colored pencils and work from the outer wing borders inward, since the small panes, curls, and petal veins need controlled points. Try a pale gold glow in the open spaces behind the antennae so the butterfly feels lit from within.

Every evening, Vera crossed the conservatory after locking the gates, tapping each dark pane with her ring and counting the same hush: leaf, petal, wing. Until one storm-bright night, she invented a game called Borrowed Wings—whatever color the lightning touched, she had to carry it to the next shape before the thunder cracked. Blue leapt to a vein. Violet raced along a curl. Her breath fogged the glass; rain drummed like running feet.

Because of that, the butterfly at the center flared awake, and because of that, the peonies below answered with a hot coral blaze that filled the ceiling ribs. Vera laughed so loudly the night watchman burst in, then the gardeners, then three sleepy students with notebooks open. Finally she pressed both palms to the warm window and called, “Pass it on!” The room erupted—leaf to bud, bud to wing, wing to face—until everyone carried a piece of the storm-bright game, tapping the panes and counting together: leaf, petal, wing.
