Every day, Calder counted one hundred spirals before the tide changed: shell curls, sand curls, the pale twist inside a broken whelk. He stopped at one hundred exactly, though the water smelled of salt and iron and the current kept sketching more questions in silver lines. Until one day, after ninety-nine, he found a spiral that had not been there when he blinked.
Because of that, he followed it past the pebble ridge; because of that, the little fish turned with him, bubbles rising like beads from an unseen string. The new spiral opened, not into an answer, but into another curl, and another, and Calder forgot his limit. Finally, when the tide lifted him home, his claws were full of wet light and his count began again at one: shell curls, sand curls, the pale twist inside a broken whelk.
