🎨 How to color it

Layer moss green and warm umber through the monkey’s patterned fur, color the curled branch in deep teak brown, and give the floating leaves a smoky olive. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny scallops, leaf veins, and narrow facial lines, turning the page as you work along each curve. For a secretive mood, shade the big background shapes in pale blue-gray while leaving a few inner swirls bright gold.

In the mist grove, Niro kept a split reed tucked under his arm, rubbing its three carved notches whenever the hanging leaves whispered. He wanted only to know why the fourth notch had been shaved smooth, but the answer seemed to wait beyond the branch where he always stopped. At dusk he stepped out, toes gripping wet bark, while the air smelled of rain and green peel. The reed clicked once against a curled vine; then a thin silver moth lifted from the gap and flew into the fog.

Niro followed until cold beads gathered in his fur and one careful leap cost him the reed’s smallest splinter. “Stay,” he breathed, though he meant it for himself. Where the moth settled, the vine carried a hidden mark exactly like the missing notch, not cut away but grown forward. He pressed the broken reed there, and the two pieces made a quiet four-note rattle, softer than thunder, braver than silence. By dawn, Niro returned to his high branch without the splinter, carrying instead the sound of the fourth notch.
